Abbot Pederson, a traveling salesman for Munsingwear, was wandering around Manhattan one day after having one too many at a local bar. He got lost & found himself face to face with a stuffed penguin at an out-of-the-way taxidermist. He bought it, named him Pete, & the two became fast friends. Until the flight home: Pete's head got knocked off & a flight attendant used Pederson's tie to remedy the situation, remarking on what a dapper bird he was. Thus was born a true American classic.
